Residential and Dementia Care in Cross Hands
The care home itself has 20 single bedrooms on the ground floor, each with its own en suite shower wet room, a large lounge/dining room and a shared kitchenette for individuals and their visitors to prepare drinks and snacks.
There are two assisted bathrooms and one assisted shower room, plus toilet facilities close to the lounge. All communal areas have a loop system.
The first floor is specifically designed to meet the needs of those with dementia. Accessed by either of two lifts, there are 21 bedrooms also with two assisted bathrooms and one assisted shower room, plus toilet facilities close to the communal areas.
On the first floor, adjacent to the large lounge/dining room, we also have our:
- dedicated activities area
- quiet room and
Each of these are see-through areas in order to compensate for the impairments some service users may have.
We also have a medication room on both floors.
The building has an integrated fire alarm system with heat and/or smoke detectors in every room and alarm call points and fire exits sited through the building. Although we have our own handyman, we use contract specialists and fire equipment specialists for skilled maintenance of the Home.
Every room is fitted with Infrared PIR motion sensors. When activated, staff are notified of movement once the sensor detects activity. Each bedroom is fitted with a door alarm also that is sounded when the door is opened or closed, providing it has been identified that this best allows staff to meet the needs of the person in that room.
Fire alarm systems are tested weekly and our staff regularly receive statutory fire training and regular on-going training and practice in fire containment and evacuation procedures.
Gwernllwyn Care Home does not have locked exits, however exits are alarmed and key coded for safety in order to alert staff to persons leaving or entering the home and every visitor is required to sign in and sign out again.
